The Registry of .gr and .ελ Domain Names, of FORTH-ICS, responsible for the technical support and operation of the Register for Top Level Domains, is pleased to announce the conquest of another milestone.

We are pleased to announce the official launch date of the .ελ Registry is July 10th, at 11:00 (local time).

Registration of domain names under the .ελ ccTLD will be possible for every interested person or legal entity, as long as the domain name of choice (or any homographs) is not already registered under .gr. To clarify,
for a period of three (3) months following the start of operations of the .ελ Registry, the assignment of .ελ Domain Names will be carried out in accordance with the following provisions of the “Regulation on Management and Assignment of .gr and .ελ Domain Names” and under the following restrictions:
- .ελ Domain Names in which the Variable Field is the same or a homograph of the Variable Field of already assigned second level .gr Domain Names are to be assigned only to the Registrant / Holder of the corresponding second level .gr Domain Name.
- .ελ Domain Names in which the Variable Field is the same or a homograph of the Variable Field of already assigned third level .gr Domain Names in which the second level is Non-variable and assuming there is no assigned second level .gr Domain Name with the same or a homograph Variable Field are to be assigned to the Registrant / Holder of the corresponding third level .gr Domain Name who first submits a Registration Declaration.
- In case there are homograph second level .gr Domain Names assigned to different Holders, then the corresponding .ελ Domain Names are not assigned.
These restrictions cease to exist following the end of the three-month period on 10/10/2018 at 11:00 local time.

In accordance with the transitory provisions of the Regulation on Management and Assignment of “.gr” Domain Names (Government Gazette 593/B/14-4-2011) and specifically under subsection A) of paragraph 3 of Article 22 "Transitional Provisions":

ΕΕΤΤ shall reject any application for the assignment of a [.gr] Domain Name in the following limitedly specified cases that constitute absolute grounds for rejection: a. If the Variable Field of a requested 2nd level [.gr] Domain Name is the same as a geographical term included in the list of geographical terms published on the ΕΕΤΤ website in its Greek and Latin form (according to Annex XII attached hereto) and the data included in the registration application do not identify the Holder submitting it as the corresponding Local Government Organisation entitled to it. This restriction shall not be applicable to the Variable Field of a requested 3rd level [.gr] Domain Name. b. If the Variable Field of a 2nd level [.gr] Domain Name constitutes a country code included in the ISO 3166-1 list of the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) etc
Please be informed that as of 8 August 2011:
a) The list of geographical terms used by the Registry is updated according to Kallikratis plan.
b) The ISO 3166-1 list of the ISO organization used by the Registry is updated (version ISO 3166:2008).
December 2010

Since December 15th, 2010 the .gr zone file as well as the zone files for the secondary level domains are digitally signed by making use of the DNSSEC technology. As the authoritative RRSets of the .gr zone are signed, DNS resolvers can use the public key that singed those records and thus authenticate them, which greatly improves the security and authenticity of the information returned from DNS name servers, eliminating DNS spoofing.
